George Henry Durrie was born in New Haven, the son of a part-owner of a stationery, book and printing shop. He began studying art with a local portraitist when he was 19; and by his early 20s was roaming New England, New York and some of the other eastern states looking for portrait commissions. After ten years as a portraitist, he turned to rendering views of the Connecticut countryside and people.
